Owatonna Wrestling Top 10-Ranked to Start Season
The Huskies are ranked No. 7 in Class AAA in the Guillotine preseason poll. Defending section champ Farmington is fifth. OHS will face the Tigers on December 4 at Farmington.
Owatonna lost 34-30 to the Tigers in the Section 1AAA semifinals last winter. Farmington then upset Hastings in the finals to earn their first trip to state. Hastings is in Section 3 this season.
OHS graduated eight seniors last season: Garrett Krutchen, Alex Green, Justin Tacheny, Wechtour Thuok, Christian Reese, Sixto Salinas, Kyle Clausen and Jathan Dettmer. Green placed fourth at state. Tacheny qualified for state.
The Huskies return state champion Peyton Robb, who won the title at 106 pounds as a freshman, and is ranked second at 120 to open the season. Junior Tanner Cole was fifth at state and is ranked fourth at 138. Junior Brandon Moen finished third at state at 152 last winter and opens this season ranked third at 182. Wrestling newcomer senior Austin Abbas qualified for state last season and is rated eighth at 285.
Junior Goy Tut just missed getting to state and is ranked seventh at 220 pounds. Freshman Cade King is ranked fourth at 132. Farmington also has six ranked wrestlers in the preseason poll, several at the same weight as Owatonna. Robb's opponent in the finals last season at 106, Victor Gliva, is also up to 120 for this season. The Tigers have a future Division I wrestler with Taylor Venz, who has committed to Nebraska and is ranked second at 182, just in front of Moen.
The Huskies open the season at the Faribault tournament Saturday, November 28. They open their home schedule Thursday, December 3, with Rochester Mayo, go to Farmington the next night.
The match on Friday, December 4, is a unique double-header. After the Huskies wrestle Farmington at 5PM, the OHS boys basketball team battles the Tigers at 7:30PM.
The Owatonna Wrestling Association is hosting a spaghetti supper Friday, November 20, at the Owatonna Junior High cafeteria from 5:30-8:30PM. Tickets will be available at the door.
