Owatonna's Mya Dutton jokes that she could do a cannon ball at the state meet this week and still be one of the top 32 divers in the state. To say she's feeling loose and having fun, might be an understatement. The freshman's goal however, would be to earn a spot in the top 16 at Thursday's preliminaries at 6 pm at the University of Minnesota to advance to Saturday's finals. Dutton is making her state meet debut after a fourth place finish at sections.

Her teammate Logan Norrid swims at state for the third time, but is a four-time qualifier. Norrid is in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke Friday at 6 pm. She is striving for a top eight finish, which is all-state. She's finished as high as 12th previously. Norrid holds school records in at least five events and tells us she may swim some different events next season to try to eclipse some of those marks too.

After missing the chance to swim a state meet in 2020, Norrid is thrilled for this week, "I'm super excited. I get to go with Mya Dutton this year. So that's a big deal...(last year) didn't get to swim at the state meet due to COVID regulations, so this year I'm excited to be back at the 'U' and getting to race people."

Norrid made her state debut as an eighth grader. She is now a three-time section champ in the 100 butterfly.

Dutton is staying loose and having a good time with the extension of her season, "Very excited. It's really fun that I get to go and experience it." She was pleasantly surprised to qualify for state, "I was there (at sections) just to have fun and just to compete. When I ended up fourth, it was really crazy, just funny to me."

Swimming coach Isaiah Fuller says Norrid is a competitor, "She's got that ability, kind of like that x-factor where she can really turn it on."
