Owatonna Girls Tennis is No. 2 Seed for Section Tournament

After a strong regular season with a second place finish in the Big Nine, and two wins over Lakeville North, Owatonna's girls tennis team is the No. 2 seed for the Section 1AA tournament, beginning Tuesday. The Huskies host Faribault at 4PM at the OHS courts. The winner advances to the section quarterfinals Thursday at the higher seed, which means another home match if the Huskies top the Falcons. OHS swept Faribault 7-0 on August 22.

The Huskies (16-1) only loss came to Big Nine champ Rochester Mayo 5-2. The Spartans have won 20 of the last 21 section titles, beating Owatonna the last four years in the finals. Lakeville North is the third seed. The teams could meet in the semifinals Tuesday October 8 in Rochester. The Huskies have defeated the Panthers 4-3 and 5-2 this season. Rochester Century, whose only conference losses came to Mayo and Owatonna, is the fourth seed.

Owatonna's Megan Johnson won the title at No. 4 singles in Saturday's Big Nine Conference individual tournament. The Huskies also had a second place finish at No. 3 singles and a pair of third place finishes from No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.

Owatonna's soccer teams are closing out their regular seasons this week. The boys have a pair of road matches, going to Austin Tuesday and Mankato East Thursday. The girls host the Packers and Cougars at 7PM at the Lincoln Soccer Complex each night.

The Owatonna girls (11-3 overall) are 6-0 versus section opponents, but are behind Lakeville South in the QRF rankings despite a recent overtime win at the Cougars.

The Huskies boys soccer squad (7-5-2) are fourth in the QRF standings among Section 1AA teams. OHS has ties against Lakeville North and Farmington and lost a 2-1 decision to Rochester Mayo, who has wins over North, South and Farmington.

OHS volleyball hosts Red Wing Tuesday night at 7PM. Medford's cross country team runs at LeSueur-Henderson and Blooming Prairie runs at Chatfield.
