New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva graduate Carlie Wager lived her childhood dream by playing for the University of Minnesota. Another dream came true Thursday night when she was drafted by the Minnesota Lynx. Wagner was selected in the third round by the defending WNBA champions. Wagner became the seventh Gophers player in program history to be chosen by the league.

Wagner finished her college career as the third-leading scorer at Minnesota with 2,215 points. She was third all-time in three-pointers made, field goal attempts and games with double-figure points. She earned All-Big Ten First-Team honors as a senior and was Academic All-District for the third straight year. She scored 18.7 points per game this past season while shooting 43-percent. She averaged almost five rebounds and more than two assists per game. In the Big Ten tournament she scored 26.5 points per game and was named to the All-Tournament team.

Wagner was a member of two state championship teams while playing for the NRHEG Panthers and is the second-leading all-time scorer in Minnesota high school girls' basketball history, according to the Minnesota State High School League website. She also holds the record for points scored in a state tournament game at 53.

The Minnesota Lynx also acquired forward Jill Barta from Gonzaga through the Las Vegas Aces.

Meanwhile the University of Minnesota made news Thursday with the announcement that Lindsay Whalen would become the Golden Gophers new women's basketball coach, replacing Marlene Stollings who just left the post to take the same position with Texas Tech this week. Whalen is a Hutchinson graduate who played for the Gophers and will play one more season with the Lynx this seasons before retiring, according to the new release from the university.
