Zumbrota-Mazeppa Girls Basketball Ends Season with Win
The Zumbrota-Mazeppa Cougar girls basketball team took awhile to get going but in the end ran away with a 65-46 win over the Triton Cobras in Dodge Center Thursday night. The Cougars close out the regular season with a five game winning streak.
It was a very sluggish game after the Cobras two seniors were honored with gifts and thank yous before the introductions. The first half there were a combined 22 turnovers and Zumbrota-Mazeppa had a 28-18 lead at the break. Triton had 12 and Zumbrota-Mazeppa 10 turnovers in the first half. The game ended with the Cobras committing 22 and the Cougars 13 turnovers.
5'8 senior Lyndsey Quam imposed her will on the Cobras for 12 first half points and finished the game with 17 including three 3 point baskets. 6'1 sophomore Ali Hunstad added 15 and had three 3 pointers. 6'0 junior Mikayla Arendt collected 12 points and so did 6'3 senior Lauren Miller.
Triton 5'11 senior Kiara Boeck was the only Cobra in double figures with 11 points.
Boeck and 5'5 classmate Kiley Yankowiak received a number of gifts from their teammates including some wooden stools with pictures on the seat. Yankowiak had 8 points.
Triton ends their regular season 5-21 and Zumbrota-Mazeppa was 19-6.
The Cougars only losses have all been to state ranked teams. Goodhue twice, Lyle-Pacelli, Stewartville, Rochester Lourdes and Hayfield. They also beat Hayfield.
The Vikings play at Goodhue Friday night and if Goodhue wins they tie for the Blue Division title and Goodhue would play Stewartville Monday night in the overall HVL title game. If Hayfield wins they capture the Blue title and go to Stewartville Monday.
There are 17 teams in Section 1 Class 2A and 11 have double digit wins. If Cannon Falls defeats Kenyon-Wanamingo Friday night in the Bomber's Hangar they will be the 12th double digit win team in the section.
Zumbrota-Mazeppa ranks second in offense (66.4) and 8th in defense (52.4) in the section.
