Trisha Yearwood Sings ‘Broken’ for ‘The Passion’ Soundtrack [LISTEN]
On Sunday night (March 20), Trisha Yearwood will portray Jesus' mother Mary in The Passion, a live TV musical. Ahead of the event, the country star has shared one of the songs she will sing during the show, "Broken."
"Broken" was originally recorded by the band Lifehouse for their 2007 album Who We Are. The song became a Top 10 hit on the Billboard Adult Top 40 chart following its release as a single in 2008.
"It's an honor and a terror to sing other people's songs, especially songs that were made famous by other artists," Yearwood admits, "because, in my mind, they were done right the first time."
Yearwood will sing "Broken" following Jesus' crucifixion during the musical. She calls the track "highly emotional" and notes that she's "just trying to put my emotion into it."
However, the singer admits that she has to keep a bit of distance as well, because of the nature of The Passion.
"As an artist, what you usually try to do when you record a song is put yourself into everything," Yearwood explains, "and this story is so much about a bigger picture that I'm kind of trying to take myself out of it ... I'm kind of trying to not perform it so much as experience the lyrics."

During The Passon, Yearwood will also perform "My Love Is Your Love," "Hands," "I Won't Give Up" and "You'll Never Walk Alone," all of which are also included on the musical's official soundtrack.
The Passion, set to air live from New Orleans beginning at 8PM ET on Fox, will bring to life the last hours of Jesus Christ's life, which include him serving the Last Supper, his betrayal by Judas, his trial by by Pontius Pilate and his crucifixion, burial and resurrection. Despite her years of experience in country music, Yearwood says she's "beyond nervous" for the performance.
"I’m really freaking out,” she adds.
Filmmaker Tyler Perry will be the two-hour musical special's host and narrator. The Passion's soundtrack is available for download via iTunes.
