A severe storm with tornadoes and strong wind spread damage across southern Minnesota Thursday. Homes were damaged in Waterville and Morristown. Power poles and power lines were down in Owatonna. A hangar and planes were damaged at the Faribault Airport. Many trees were down across the region from the quick moving storm.

Waseca Police instructed residents to stay home due to downed lines and flooded streets. The Rice County Sheriff's Office issued a curfew in Morristown, requiring people to stay in their homes from 10 pm through 6:30 am. Northfield Police asked people to not drive around and look at storm damage.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation reported crashes and damage along I-35 between Owatonna and the Northfield area. Highway 20 was closed in Cannon Falls due to power lines on the road. Trucks were restricted on Highway 13 near Waseca due to low-hanging power lines.

The entire Owatonna School District is now closed for Friday, September 21. This decision was made after more information was discovered regarding power outages, damage and road closures. The OHS homecoming parade is tentatively pushed back to 3:30 pm Friday. The football game against John Marshall is still on for now. Northfield, WEM and Cannon Falls schools announced they would be closed on Friday.

The National Weather Service stated on their twitter account that they will send out officials to survey damage and determine locations of tornadoes and their strength.
