Steele County Blades Goalie Decides to Play for Hamline

The Steele County Blades junior hockey team announces that goaltender Mike Severson will play college hockey for Hamline University in St. Paul.

Severson, from Viroqua, Wisconsin, played portions of two season with the Owatonna-based hockey team. He had an 8-9 record during the 2016-17 season with a .906 save percentage and 2.92 goals against average.

In the news release from the United States Premier Hockey League, Blades coach Nick Adamek stated, "This has been a long time in the making. Mike has worked his tail off to get to this point in his career. Though he had a few options, Hamline was an easy decision for him."

Hamline University is a Division III team that plays in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). Cory Laylin is entering his fourth season as the Pipers' head coach.

Severson said, "I'm very excited to join Hamline University as a student-athlete this fall. It's a great school with a high standard of excellence, and the hockey team has been very successful...I cannot thank the Steele County Blades, coach Adamek and coach Solari enough for providing an excellent platform to grow both as an individual and as a hockey player."

Several of Severson's Blades' teammates have also committed to colleges. Goalie Tim Grounds will attend Wisconsin-River Falls, while forward Soren Colstrup and his brother Erik, a defense man, will attend Framingham State University in Massachusetts.
