St. Olaf College To Change Name On Arts Building

Normally you hear about colleges naming buildings after someone for something special they did for the university or private college. St. Olaf College announced Thursday they are removing the name of a professor from the arts building.

According to the Star Tribune, since 2002 the arts building at St. Olaf was named for Reidar Dittmann, who was a Holocaust survivor who taught art and Norwegian at the college for 45 years. He passed away in 2010 at age 88.

St. Olaf has had some problems with sexual assault. During an investigation into those incidents, the Star Tribune reported that the college’s attorney, Carl Lehmann, was able to get details to support the reports of misconduct. And that alumni had come forward saying they were victims of assault by past faculty or staff members.

As a result of the findings, President David Anderson announced that Dittmann’s name will come down from the arts building.

The Star Tribune reported that Dittmann’s family was in shock and dismayed by the events. Dittmann was the founder of the school’s international studies program and was awarded the St. Olav Medal in 1977.
