Three Section 1 football teams won their state quarterfinal games Friday. Two out of three volleyball teams representing the section lost in the state tournament semifinals.

Defending nine-man football champion Grand Meadow opened its title defense with a dominating 36-0 win over Edgerton-Ellsworth. The Superlarks advance to the semifinals at U.S. Bank Stadium on Friday, November 18.

Rushford-Peterson beat Murray County Central 44-21 to reach the Class A semifinals on Saturday, November 19. Winona upset top-ranked South St. Paul 24-0 in the Class 4A quarterfinals to earn the trip to downtown Minneapolis next week.

The other Section 1 teams play Saturday. Owatonna meets Apple Valley at 6PM at Lakeville North High School on Kat Kountry 105FM in the 5A quarterfinals. Caledonia plays Lakeview at 11AM at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter in the AA tournament, followed by Rochester Lourdes versus Jackson County Central at 2PM.

Several other southern Minnesota teams played Friday night. Maple River beat Norwood Young America on Friday night 12-7 in Class AA. Marshall whipped Friday 40-7 in Class 4A. JWP lost to Minneapolis North in Class A 32-13.

At the state volleyball tournament at the Xcel Energy Center, top-ranked Kenyon-Wanamingo lost to Concordia Academy 3-2 in the semifinals. Kasson-Mantorville dropped a 3-1 decision to Maple Lake. The Knights and Komets will meet in the third-place match at 1PM Saturday on Kat Kountry 105FM.

Mayer Lutheran and Caledonia meet in the Class A final. Eagan and Champlin Park battle for the large school championship.
