The winter sports season is here. OHS girls' hockey hosts Mankato East at 7PM at the Four Seasons Centre on Thursday night. Owatonna returns their top five scorers from last season.

Owatonna finished 14-12 last season, their seventh consecutive winning campaign. Margo Achterkirch led the team in scoring with 28 points on 13 goals and 15 assists. Other top scorers back are Jessica "Betty" VonRuden (13G, 11A), Jenna Bogen (8G, 8A), Jenna VonRuden (3G, 4A) and Jamie Davison (2G, 4A).

Owatonna's main goaltender from last season, Kacy Borwege, graduated. Katie Johnson and Mariah Jorgenson were also seniors last year.

Tim Hunst begins his 16th season as head coach. Joel Tornell is his assistant.

Rochester John Marshall and Red Wing each went unbeaten in the Big Nine last winter. JM has a 35-game conference unbeaten streak alive entering their season opener at Mayo Saturday afternoon. Owatonna went 11-6 in the Big Nine in 2014-15 for a fourth-place finish.

Lakeville South beat Lakeville North in the Section 1AA final last season. Both are top 10-ranked in the preseason poll.

After hosting Mankato East on Thursday at 7PM, the Huskies play at Albert Lea on Saturday at 1PM. View the full schedule here.
