Faribault Falcon senior Joe Palmer scored what is believed to be a school record for Faribault tonight.  He poured in 57 points in a 80-73 loss to Hutchinson in Nomeland Gym at Faribault High School.  It may also be the most points scored by an individual in Big Nine history.  I'm not sure if non-conference games are counted in the conference records.

Following the game I immediately thought of the most prolific Falcon I saw in my 31 years in Faribault, Mitch Ohnstad.  I phoned Mitch and he said he never got out of the 40's in scoring for the Falcons.  I then checked a website that claims to have all the Minnesota boys basketball records on it.  The top Big Nine score was last night's 55 points by Rochester John Marshall senior 6'9 Matthew Hurt against Winona.  Gabe Madsen of Rochester Mayo scored 53 points last February.

Hurt also had 11 rebounds Friday night against Winona in the Rockets 85-70 win.  My statistics had the 6'4 Palmer with 12 rebounds, 7 on the offensive glass.  The Falcons leading scorer was 12 of 17 at the free throw line, had five three point baskets (same as Hurt) and 20 made field goals in the game.  He was 2 for 6 to start at the free throw line, then hit 8 in a row before connecting on 2 of his last 3 attempts.

Hutchinson led 37-28 at the break and Palmer had 25 points. I witnessed a tremendous comeback by Faribault.  In fact the Falcons took the lead with 6 minutes left in the game.  It appeared they spent all their energy getting back into the game. Hutchinson would score in the final few minutes on layup after layup.

At the 4 minutes to go mark of the second half the Tigers had a 65-63 lead.  At 3 minutes it was 69-63 and with 1:36 to go Hutchinson had a 7 point lead.

Palmer fouled out of the game with 28 seconds to go and received a standing ovation from the fans.

No other Faribault player scored in double digits.  6'5 sophomore Nick Ehlers had 6 points and 8 rebounds.

Hutchinson had four players in double figures.  The Falcons have now dropped two straight after losing to Rochester Mayo Friday night and are 3-2 overall and 2-1 in Big nine play.
