Owatonna High School senior Peter Jones is tied for first after the opening round of the state AAA golf tournament at Bunker Hills. He and two others carded 71s on Tuesday.

The future University of Minnesota golfer is tied with Jack Koehler of Eden Prairie and Mason Fiddle of White Bear Lake with 71. Two golfers are one stroke back. Four more are two shots off the pace. In fact, 28 golfers are within five strokes of the lead. Round two is Wednesday at Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids. In the team standings, there is a three-way tie with White Bear Lake, Wayzata and Eden Prairie all shooting 302.

This is Jones' fourth straight year at state. He was the runner-up two seasons ago. Last year he finished in the top 10. As a freshman he was 15th.

Owatonna senior Maddie Peglow is at state for the first time and shot 90 on Tuesday. She is tied for 55th place. The leader shot 72.

The Triton boys are in fifth place in the team standings after the opening round of the AA tournament at Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan. The Cobras shot 316. The leading club is Blake with 296. Mankato East shot 297. Individually for Triton, Jaden Thiemann shot 71 and is in sixth place overall. Zach Otto shot 78 and is in 43rd place. Austin Gillund is 68th with 83. Preston Pflaum shot 84 and is in 72nd place. Ethan Otterbein shot 85 and Max Henderson shot 99.

Blooming Prairie sophomore Taylor Christianson is playing at Pebble Creek in Becker and making her second straight appearance at state. After Tuesday's opening round she is tied for 12th with 86. The leader carded a 76.
