Thursday was the season opener for several Owatonna High School teams. It was also the third time in four days that OHS girls tennis competed, sweeping their matches.

Huskies girls tennis improved to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the Big Nine with a 7-0 win over Mankato West and a 6-1 victory over Winona. It was the Huskies' home opener.

OHS volleyball opened their season with a 3-0 loss at top-ranked Prior Lake. Set scores were 25-9, 25-13 and 25-12. The Huskies graduated six players off last season's team and have moved a couple of returning players to new positions. The Lakers, who were one win away from the state tournament last season, return seven of their top nine players. Lexi and Carli Langeland led the team in kills. Senior Elise Oppegard had several kills and an impressive ace block late in the match and was named the Kottke Jewelers Diamond Player of the Match.

NRHEG volleyball swept Alden Conger 3-0. Byron topped Blooming Prairie 3-0.

Owatonna soccer came back from Apple Valley with a draw and a win. The OHS girls tied the Eagles 1-1. The Huskies boys blanked Apple Valley 3-0.

OHS girls cross country opened their season Thursday at River Falls, Wis.
