Owatonna High School announced via press release Friday that Marc Achterkirch will be the new Activities Director effective July 1, 2018. Current AD Ryan Swanson's contract expires June 30. The Owatonna Magnet reported in January that he would leave the post at that time. The school board must still approve the hiring.

Achterkirch has spent his entire 23-year teaching and coaching career in Owatonna. He holds a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction, in addition to a Math Education degree. He is also working on a Specialist Degree in K-12 Administration according to the news release. Achterkirch played football at the University of Minnesota-Duluth after lettering in football, hockey and track at Blaine High School.

Achterkirch has coached football and hockey in Owatonna at the youth and varsity level. He will maintain his position as the associate head football coach and defensive coordinator in addition to handling the role as Activities Director. Achterkirch has won the Butch Nash award and assistant coach of the year awards while working on the Owatonna staff. He has coached in the all-star game twice.

OHS principal Mark Randall says, "We are thrilled to have Marc lead our activities and look forward to his passion, enthusiasm, organization and leadership. Marc's focus has always been on doing what is best for students and we look forward to him bringing this type of leadership to our activities department."
