Owatonna Boys Rally from Behind for Season Sweep of Mayo
Owatonna boys hockey rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat Rochester Mayo 4-2 at Graham Arena for the Huskies' first series sweep of the season since 2002-03.
The Spartans scored late in the first period and took a 1-0 lead into intermission. Owatonna had a two-man advantage for a full two minutes early in the second but didn't convert. Mayo went up 2-0 with three minutes to go. The Huskies responded with a Tyler Wencl goal with 48 seconds to go in the second period to make the score 2-1 at the break.
The Huskies went on a power play at 9:09 of the third. One minute later, Mitch Wiese ripped a shot from the blue line into the net for a 2-2 tie. John Swenson and Adam Rehman assisted. Two minutes later OHS found themselves on the penalty kill with Nick Smith going to the box. The Huskies are better than 85 percent on the penalty kill this season. As the time expired on his infraction, Smith joined a rush into the zone, which ended with Carter Broton slipping a great pass to Wencl, who slammed it home for the winning goal.
Broton added an empty netter with 30 seconds left for the 4-2 victory, which was the same score of the early season meeting. Owatonna outshot Mayo 41-11. The Huskies (11-8 overall, 8-4 Big Nine) host Chanhassen on Monday at 7PM at Four Seasons in a makeup game. Tuesday they play at South St. Paul at 7PM on Kat Kountry 105FM.
