The Owatonna boys basketball team won its eighth straight game, beating Albert Lea 78-42. The OHS girls won their fifth in a row, topping the Tigers 70-36.

In Albert Lea, the boys game was close until about the midpoint of the first half. The Huskies broke open a one-point game with a 25-5 run to end the half and take a 38-17 lead into the halftime locker room. Dalton Kubista led four Huskies in double figures with 20. Jay Sullivan had 14. Nolan Malo and Ethan Dekam scored 10 apiece. Dekam had a big rebounding as well and earned the Kottke Jeweler's Diamond Player of the Game honor.

Owatonna (11-3, 9-2 Big Nine) hosts Northfield on Tuesday.

The Owatonna girls opened up a 25-point first half lead and withstood a brief Albert Lea comeback while keeping a healthy rotation of players off the bench. The Tigers drew within 15 points a couple of times in the second half when their three-point shot started to connect. Owatonna closed the game on a 25-6 sprint. Eleven players scored for the Huskies. Syd Schultz had 15. Ahna Stelter scored 10 and grabbed nearly 10 rebounds while blocking a couple of shots and making a couple of steals to land the Kottke Jeweler's award. Lexi Falken scored nine.

Owatonna (12-3, 11-2) plays at Northfield on Tuesday.

The girls boosters and parents hosted the "Coaches versus Cancer" fundraiser to benefit the American Cancer Society's Relay for Like. The various activities raised $2,550. The teams posed for a group picture in their cancer awareness shirts before the game.

The OHS boys basketball team hosted its "Coaches versus Cancer" activity last week and raised a similar amount. The OHS girls hockey team will hold their annual "Skate for a Cure" cancer fundraiser Saturday night at 7:30PM at the Four Seasons Centre against Northfield. The Steele County Blades present "Stick it to Cancer" Friday, February 3, when they host Detroit in junior hockey during Federated Insurance night.
