Huskies baseball opens its season Tuesday at defending section champ Northfield at 5PM with radio coverage on KRFO AM 1390. Pregame starts at about 4:45PM.

Owatonna has one of the latest opening dates in the Big Nine and thus has not had to postpone any games so far. Northfield is 1-1 after a win over Farmington and loss to New Prague. The Huskies spent some time at the dome in Austin to get in some quality practice without weather concerns. Owatonna faces a challenging schedule this season that includes a number of ranked teams, including Minnetonka and Eden Prairie. Northfield is rated No. 5AAA in the preseason poll.

Tuesday's game is a rematch of the Section 1AAA final, which was won by Northfield last June. In fact the Raiders have ended Owatonna's season for three straight years.

The Huskies are led by a trio of veteran senior captains, according to 10th-year head coach Tate Cummins. Alec Holcomb is a second-year captain. He is an experienced catcher but will also be looked at for some starting assignments on the mound this spring. Cummins says Sam Hylle is a solid presence at the plate in the middle of the lineup and might play third base. Blake Westphal gives the Huskies good speed at the lead off spot and in center field.

Cummins says it "looks like we have a little bit more (pitching) depth than we've had in previous years." He told KRFO there are some changes on defense, "This year we have a number of kids coming back, but I tell you, there probably hasn't been a year for quite some time where we've had this many varsity positions open." He said some players might be playing new positions. He looks at the offense as being a strength.
