Northfield, Mayo Improve to 3-0 in Big Southeast Football
Upcoming Owatonna opponents Northfield and Rochester Mayo improved to 3-0 Friday. Mankato West and Winona are also unbeaten on the season.
The Huskies dropped to 1-2 as Faribault ground out a 21-10 win Friday night at Bruce Smith Field. Owatonna goes to Northfield on Friday night for a Big Southeast, Red Sub-district game. The Raiders are 3-0 overall after beating Mankato East 23-8. Northfield's defense forced three turnovers and didn't give up a touchdown as the Cougar's points came on a defensive score.
Owatonna beat Northfield 34-23 in the regular season in 2015, but lost 15-3 in the section playoffs with all the points coming on field goals. The Huskies won the Red Sub-district last year with a 5-0 mark. Each team is 1-0 in the division this season.
Rochester Mayo (3-0, 1-0 Red Sub-district) overcame four turnovers to beat Austin on Friday 17-0. The Packers' Tabarie Gunsallus rushed for 203 yards.
Mankato West (3-0, 1-0 in Blue Sub-district) pulled away from Rochester John Marshall (1-2, 0-1 Red) 35-20.
Winona (3-0, 1-0 Blue) beat New Prague (0-3, 0-1 Red) 14-7 despite nine penalties and four turnovers. The Winhawks got inside the Trojans' five-yard line twice without getting points.
Rochester Century (1-2, 0-1 Red) built a big lead and held off Red Wing (0-3, 0-1 Blue) 35-20.
Week four match-ups include Owatonna at Northfield, Faribault at Mankato East, Rochester Mayo at New Prague, Austin at Mankato West, Rochester Century at John Marshall and Winona at Red Wing.
