Kenny Chesney: Country Music’s Top Money-Maker in 2015
Money doesn't grow on trees, but for country artists such as Kenny Chesney and Luke Bryan, it might as well. Both superstars landed in the Top 10 of Billboard's list of the top musical money-makers of 2015, coming in at No. 2 and No. 7, respectively.
Chesney raked in $39.8 million in total revenue in 2015: $1.1 million in sales, $239,600 in streaming, $313,200 in publishing and $38.1 million in touring. Clearly, the "American Kids" hitmaker's 2015 The Big Revival Tour was a success! Bryan, meanwhile, totaled $23.1 million in revenue in 2015: $4 million in sales, $511,500 in streaming, $694,900 in publishing and $17.9 million in touring. Based on those numbers, Bryan is country music's No. 1 streaming act (and 13th among all artists), with 667 million streams in 2015.
Also on 2015's Top Money-Makers list are Jason Aldean and Shania Twain. Aldean filled his bank account with a whopping $18.9 million last year, landing at No. 11 on the list. Much of his income came from touring ($17.1 million), and he made $1.6 million from music sales; his publishing royalties only added up to $23,500, since he often relies on outside songwriters. As for Twain, she banked an impressive $14.4 million in 2015, and almost all of it came from her North American Rock This Country Tour, which made $13.8 million and put her on the road for the first time in 11 years.
Other notable country acts to grace this year's list include Florida Georgia Line (No. 19, $11.5 million in revenue for 2015), Eric Church (No. 23, $10.1 million), Brad Paisley (No. 35, $6.8 million) and Toby Keith (No. 38, $6.5 million). It's probably no surprise that country-turned-worldwide-pop-star Taylor Swift tops the list, with $73.5 million in total revenue.
Billboard's Top Money-Makers List was compiled using data from Nielson Music and Billboard Boxscore. Swift and Chesney topped the list in 2014, earning with $39,699,575.60 and $32,956,240.70, respectively. Chesney was the top-earning country artist in 2013, at No. 5, followed by Tim McGraw at No. 7.
