Huskies Reach Finals of the Heritage Hockey Tournament

The Owatonna boys' hockey team advanced to the finals of the Duluth Heritage Tournament with a back-and-forth 5-4 win over Apple Valley Friday. OHS rallied from a one-goal deficit twice and ended with a big third period.

Tied at 2-2 at second intermission, Dom Valento and Casey Johnson scored back-to-back goals a minute apart early in the third period. Valento's second goal of the night was assisted by Jacob Stoykovich and Collin Pederson. Johnson added another later in the period after the Eagles had pulled within 4-2. His second goal was assisted by Zach and Luke Kubicek. Apple Valley scored in the closing minute for the 5-4 final, Owatonna's third straight victory.

Andrew Munns scored late in the first period to equal the game at one each after the Eagles had scored barely a minute into the game. Valento scored early in the second, shortly after Apple Valley retook the lead.

Owatonna was 3-for-4 on the power play. The Eagles out shot the Huskies 33-27. Zach Wiese made 29 saves. The finals of the Heritage Tournament are Saturday.

Huskies' wrestling is tied for fourth with Apple Valley after the opening day of the Rumble on the Red in Fargo. Cade King and Blake West each went unbeaten Friday. King could face Albert Lea's Zach Glazier in the finals at 182 pounds Saturday. Glazier upset King at the Minnesota Christmas Tournament earlier in December.

Landen Johnson, Kaden Nelson and Nick Staska are all still active in the wrestle-backs. Perham leads the team standings with 98.5 points, followed by Scott West (82.5), Northfield (82) and Owatonna and Apple Valley (79.5).

The Owatonna girls' hockey team lost to University School of Milwaukee 3-1 in the consolation final of their bracket of the Schwan Cup in Blaine.

OHS girls' basketball lost to the host club at the Buffalo Tournament Friday 67-39 to wrap up that two-day event. The Huskies host Austin Thursday, January 3 at the OHS gym.

Owatonna's boys' basketball squad dropped a 63-58 decision to Duluth East at the Hibbing Tournament, which wraps up on Saturday.
