The Owatonna girls hockey team outscored Rochester Mayo 6-4 Thursday. The OHS boys scored a 4-2 victory. Owatonna is a combined 5-0 against the Rochester schools.

Owatonna's girls fell behind 1-0 on the opening shift of their game against Mayo at Graham Arena and were out shot in the first period 10-6. The Huskies stormed out to start the second period. Margo Achterkirch scored the first of her three goals about four minutes into the middle stanza. Her linemates Jenna Bogen and Syndey Hunst followed with goals for a 3-1 lead after two periods.

Mayo cut their deficit to 3-2 less than five minutes into the third period on a power play. Owatonna countered with back-to-back goals from Bogen and Achterkirch a short time later for a 5-2 lead. Late in the period, Mayo tallied a short-handed goal. Achterkirch answered with her hat trick marker less than a minute later.

Mayo scored with about 30 second left and an extra attacker on the ice for the 6-4 margin. OHS has one win each over Century, John Marshall and Mayo. The Huskies (10-5-1, 9-0-1 Big Nine) play a makeup game at Mankato East on Monday, January 16, at 5PM.

The Owatonna boys also found themselves behind early in the first period on a fluke deflection on Mayo's only shot on net of the period. Before intermission the Huskies tied the game at 1-1 on a goal by Adam Rehman. Each team scored a goal in the penalty-filled second period for a 2-2 draw after two. Tyler Wencl had the OHS goal.

Braeden Meier got the game-winning goal 2:28 into the third from a tough angle. Nate Smith closed the scoring at 7:08 for the 4-2 win. Mitchell Wiese had two assists.

Owatonna (6-6) is 3-0 in section games with wins over Farmington, John Marshall and Mayo. The Huskies host Faribault on Tuesday night.
