Early damage estimates are more than 1 million dollars to the Northfield Wastewater Treatment facility after a fire on Tuesday. The equipment that processes wastewater caught fire and may take many months to repair.

Authorities say that Residents can flush their toilets, but now the city can't process all the waste and will truck it to an out of town facility.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

Northfield Public Works Director Dave Bennett said in a statement "There's no public health risks and no public safety concerns."

According to the Northfield News the equipment burned can't be repaired it has to be replaced. In January, part of the plant flooded causing between $200,000 and $300,000 in repairs. The City Council voted at that time to declare a local emergency, so staff could immediately access unbudgeted funds for the necessary repairs.
