Faribault Tops Owatonna 21-10 with Big Ground Game
The Falcons had a pair of 100-yard rushers in a 21-10 win over the Huskies that ended a five-game losing skid to the Huskies.
Faribault's 225-pound running back Felipe Ramirez carried 33 times for nearly 150 yards and a touchdown. The Falcons' 6-foot-9 quarterback Kade Hart had 115 yards on just seven carries. One was a 70-yard sprint for a score shortly after Owatonna had taken its only lead of the night 7-6. Hart's score put Faribault up 12-7 going into halftime.
The Huskies scored midway through the second quarter for their short-lived lead. The Falcons had opened the scoring late in the first quarter. Ramirez bulled his way into the end zone from five yards out to end an 11-play, 70-yard drive.
Owatonna took the opening drive of the third quarter 52 yards in 13 plays for a 27-yard field goal from Aidan Buryska to pull within 12-10. The Falcons quickly responded. Ryan Teske took the hand off on a counter play barely a minute later and dashed 46 yards for a touchdown and a 19-10 lead after the PAT sailed through the uprights.
Owatonna's next three drives all ended with punts and their final time with the ball ended with a safety on a sack in the end zone for the 21-10 final. Faribault rushed for more than 350 yards on the night while holding Owatonna to 140 on the ground and less than 100 through the air. Faribault had just 30 yards passing on three completions.
The Huskies had golden field position on their first two drives but didn't score. After Ben Staska forced a fumble early in the first quarter, the Huskies had the ball on the Falcons' 35-yard line but ended up punting. Owatonna blocked Faribault's punt a few plays later and started from the Falcons' 25-yard line but tossed an interception to end that opportunity.
Owatonna (1-2) plays at Northfield and Faribault (2-1) is at Mankato East on Friday, September 23.
