The skies were cloudy Monday, but the hopes and dreams are sunny for the 2017-18 athletes as the prep sports season began across Minnesota.

At Owatonna High School, volleyball, football and girls tennis players were all going through the opening hours of their seasons just a few feet away from each other. Soccer teams, the cross country runners and girls swimmers also held their first official workouts Monday.

The first team to open their season will be the girls tennis squad that goes to Lakeville North on Monday, August 21, to face the Panthers and Eden Prairie.

The Huskies soccer teams open the season with back-to-back home doubleheaders against Section 1AA teams. Farmington comes to Owatonna on Thursday, August 24, at 5PM. Lakeville North rolls in Saturday, August 26, at 1PM. The OHS boys are the defending section champs and beat North and Farmington to reach the state tournament. Click here for the girls' schedule.

On the same night, the volleyball team will host the Tigers as well. It will be the debut for new Owatonna coach Whitney Ordal.

OHS football scrimmages at Lakeville South on Saturday, August 26, at 9AM. The Huskies host Faribault on Friday, September 1, to open the season. Rochester Mayo visits in week two, which is also the Hall of Fame game. OHS is the defending section champ.

Owatonna's swimmers begin their campaign in Rochester on Thursday, August 31, against Mayo. The Huskies cross country season starts at Austin on August 31. The KRFO coaches show will air August 26.
