Driver’s License and Vehicle Tab Renewals are Limited While Computer Systems Upgraded

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety announces that online vehicle tab renewals are unavailable through July 24 as computer systems are updated.

In-person tab renewals will not be available beginning July 20. Randall's License Bureau in Owatonna indicates they will be closed starting July 20, but will reopen on July 24 for regular business. In addition to tab renewals, plate replacements and title transfer services won't be available July 20-24. Offices that remain open should be able to handle driver's license renewals, permits and ID card updates.

The Driver and Vehicles Services division is replacing a computer mainframe system that is about 30 years old, according to the news release. Officials also caution drivers that when services resume July 24 they should allow for extra time as workers learn the new system.

Among the improvements when the new system is up and running will be quicker title transfers. Nearly 2 million driver's licenses are renewed each year. More than 7 million vehicles were registered in Minnesota in 2016.
