The baseball season opened for the Huskies on Friday night with a 2-1 win over Rochester Century in eight innings. Owatonna High School softball lost 10-1 to Rochester JM on Friday.

The defending Big Nine champ Huskies opened the season with a 2-1 eight-inning win over Rochester Century. Junior Sam Hylle hit a smash to the left field gap with two outs to drive in senior Dexter Leer, who opening the inning with a walk. He advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by senior Isaac Rocha.

Hylle also turned in a pair of solid plays at third base in the top of the eighth with the go-ahead run on third. Friday was Hylle's birthday. The student section at Fuller Field at Dartt's Park sang him "Happy Birthday" after the game.

Rocha started the game on the mound, junior Alec Holcomb got the win in relief. The game was error free by both teams.

The Huskies host Northfield at noon Saturday. Tuesday's game at Faribault will be on KRFO AM 1390.

Softball: Rochester JM 10, Owatonna 1

The Rockets jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first inning. JM added six more over the final two innings. The Huskies had base runners in nearly every inning but stranded six. They also a runner thrown out at home, one was caught stealing and another was lost on a double play.

The Huskies had some defensive highlights. They turned a pair of double plays on line drives caught by Jamie Davison and Rachel Williamson. Right fielder Riely Sheehy made a great running grab of a fly ball toward the foul line.

The Huskies go to Northfield on Saturday and host Faribault on Tuesday.
