Big Southeast Football Report: Winona and Mankato West Remain Unbeaten
Top 10 ranked squads Winona and Mankato West kept their winning streaks alive Friday night. The teams go head-to-head on Wednesday, October 19, in Mankato.
While Owatonna sits alone atop the Big Southeast Red Division standings, the Blue Division lead is shared by Winona and Mankato West. The Huskies used several short fields while beating Rochester Mayo 42-21 in their homecoming game Friday night at OHS. Owatonna goes to New Prague on Friday, October 14, and closes their season at Rochester Century on Wednesday, October 19.
No. 5-4A Winona topped Faribault at Paul Giel Field on Friday night 26-8, holding the Falcons to 50 yards rushing, according to the Winona Daily News. The Winhawks also forced a couple of fumbles and had a successful goal-line stand in the first half.
The No. 2-5A Scarlets blanked Red Wing 42-0. Mankato West led just 7-0 after the first quarter but opened up a four-touchdown lead by halftime. West quarterback Robert Meidl had three scores on the ground and threw one in as well, according to the Red Wing Republic Eagle.
Rochester Century shutout New Prague 32-0. The Rochester Post-Bulletin says the Panthers amassed 359 yards of offense. Caden Flodstrom threw for 158 yards with two touchdowns to Gabe Supalla. Miguel Benjamin carried for 123 yards and a score.
Northfield dominated Rochester John Marshall 36-14. The Raiders built a 29-0 lead before JM found the end zone. The Raiders returned the opening kickoff of the game for a score. Quarterback Noah Johnson moved out to tight end where he caught three touchdown passes, two from Lars Prestemon.
Austin won a game for the first time since the 2014 season, beating Albert Lea 50-7 in a nondistrict game. Marshall handled Mankato East 42-14.
